Canada is known around the world for many things, such as it’s politeness or it’s love of hockey. It is also known for a vibrant craft beer industry, and has multiple prominent award-winning breweries. Two examples of these breweries are Propeller Brewing Company in Nova Scotia, and Steamworks Brewery in Vancouver.
Propeller Brewing Company celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in 2017. Founded in 1997 by John Allen, who began making beer from home as a way to pass the time between work, this brewing company has done well, with two locations, and stores carry its products across Canada. Steamworks Brewery is an interesting company, and is one of the only of it’s kind in Canada. Founded in 1995 by Eli Gershkovitch, he found himself in possession of a building with a rare steam heat system, which he incorporated into the brewery processes and in its branding. The company has expanded into a second location, and has won numerous awards over it’s 20 plus years of operation.
Among the entrepreneurs of the craft beer industry, Eli Gershkovitch has one of the most interesting stories. As a lawyer, Eli Gershkovitch had a unique connection with the industry even before starting Steamworks Brewery. He helped clients with liquor licenses, which gave him a unique perspective that many others wouldn’t have. Follow Eli Gershkovitch’s profile on twitter.com.
This legal background helped Steamworks Brewery greatly. One of it’s first hurdles was dealing with a liquor license moratorium that prevented the brewery from operating at the location that Eli wanted. Eli Gershkovitch was a major leader in getting that moratorium overturned. This hurdle took time to overcome, but the brewery overcame it and opened.
Eli Gershkovitch’s analytic perspective on business also led to Steamworks Brewery being successful over the years. The brewery had only six craft beers by the end of its first year. This spoke to a business plan that wanted a steady, proven expansion. Instead of immediately introducing every idea they had, they would follow economic trends, allowing the business a steady growth. This steady growth is one of the reasons why the company has remained so successful in the industry.
