Sheldon Lavin has an education background in accounting and finance. He has worked as an executive in the banking industry. Sheldon Lavin also owned a financial consulting firm. In the 1970s, he helped finance Otto &Sons, a meat market and butcher shop in Chicago and he helped it move into a global market. The Otto & Sons changed to OSI Group in 1975. He later became the CEO of the OSI Group with his focus mainly on sustainability, food safety, and green practices. Purpose and innovation is a vital element for him, and with this, Sheldon has been able to have joint ventures, purchases, and acquisitions that are planned strategically leading to expansion of the OSI Group to other countries across the globe. Lavin is committed to promoting a supply chain that is sustainable, reducing environmental impact and making contributions to workers that are socially responsible. Sheldon also makes donations to charities for chronic illness, Jewish organizations, sick children, and college funds.

In 2016, India’s Vision World Academy recognized Sheldon Lavin with a Global Visionary Award. The award honors visionaries from different fields who have transformed their dreams into reality through persistence and perseverance to accomplish their goals. Sheldon Lavin moved the OSI Group from its small beginnings as a domestic food company, to the global multibillion dollar food processor that it is now.
